Feed the Minds is working on it’s third project with partner Craftshare Vocational Training Centre (CVTC), in the Southern Province of Bo, Sierra Leone.
Supported by Feed the Minds, CVTC is providing literacy classes and vocational training for 350 marginalised young people and adults. As well as literacy skills, participants are taught trades including tailoring, cloth weaving, tie-dying, carpentry and masonry - important skills for job creation and economic empowerment in a country where poverty and severe youth unemployment are widespread.
Building On Success
The project is building on the success of CTVC and Feed the Minds' last programme, which saw 758 locals from Bo graduate from the Centre in 2006. All had successfully completed the literacy and skills training programme.
One of the graduates, David Johnson, said: "I didn't go to school. Before attending classes at CVTC , I found it difficult to write my name and make estimates on my own, despite being a carpenter for seven years. Now I can do all these things and even manage some record keeping. I suffered for so long in the darkness because I couldn't read and write; now I feel as if I can see."
